The RPO’s national chairman is elected by voting delegates every two years during the Annual Congress. Two Vice-Chairmen are elected by the Executive Council annually at the first meeting of the year.

The Chairman, 2 Vice-Chairmen and the Chief Executive Officer form the RPO Management Committee. All financial matters are handled, monitored and approved by the RPO Audit and Risk Committee. The financial activities are in line with the provisions of the current King corporate governance report as applicable to organisations in South Africa. The RPO’s other activities are set out in several policy documents that are submitted to the Executive Council for approval.  The Executive Council represents the highest authority when the Congress is not in session.

Other role players are also involved in some Executive Council meetings and those only have observer status.

The role players are, but is not limited to-

  • Representative(s) of the Red Meat Industry Services (RMIS)
  • Tertiary institutions (universities)
  • RuVASA (Ruminant Veterinary Association of South Africa) – animal health

  • NAHF (National Animal Health Forum) – animal health
  • Consultants (reproduction, grazing and feeds, greenhouse emissions, transformation and training (SETA accredited))

The provincial RPO’s are affiliated to the national RPO but function autonomously – they are therefore a legal entity and can enter into transactions, assets and liabilities in person without the national RPO being held legally liable. The national RPO is therefore also a juristic person and the provincial Organisations cannot be held legally liable for any activities and/or actions taken by the national RPO.

The PRF’s main objectives are to replace imported protein for animal use with locally produced protein, but also to promote better utilisation of protein. These objectives are promoted through funding research and technology transfers.

Research is funded in terms of appropriate related crops, oil seeds and fish meal and other protein sources, as well as, the application and utilisation thereof by the most important fish, animal and poultry species that are specific to the South African market.

All related research, finalised and current, is available on the PRF web page, at www.proteinresearch.net
