DISCUSSIONS HELD ON INTERNATIONAL LEVEL

The International Discussion Forum between producers from South Africa, Namibia and Botswana recently took place in Maun, Botswana.

The exportation of live weaners and small stock from Namibia and Botswana to South Africa was inter alia discussed. It is clear that producers that export to South Africa are regulated more strictly by both countries.

Another aspect that received priority within the Forum was the exportation of genetic material and live stud animals to neighbouring countries. Dr Pierre van Rooyen, Chairman of the Genetic Export Advisory Committee, informed the Forum of the demand for Dorper genetics from Russia and Kazakhstan as well. Finalising these protocols will increase the profitability of local stud breeders.

The new regulations regarding the exportation of live animals to South Africa and the inspections conducted by the South African Border Management Agency were also discussed. These regulations under the Animal Improvement Act determines that the animals exported to South Africa must now be branded and tattooed and accompanied by a special permit. This is not a new practice and it was negotiated in the past that live animals should be branded and/or tattooed.

Other matters which were discussed include animal diseases, the export of roughage from South Africa to Namibia, and traceability. Dr Frikkie Maré, CEO of the RPO, also presented an overview of the current economic situation of primary producers in South Africa.

The objective of the discussion forum is to liaise on matters of concern in the primary sector of all three countries and this forum has become a very important structure where problems of mutual concern are discussed.
