THERE IS LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL
The red meat industry is currently under pressure due to the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) situation as well as a lot of other challenges, according to Angus Williamson, chairman of the KwaZulu-Natal RPO.
He said due to the drought situation in parts of the country, producers are offloading their weaners at a lighter weight, not only in KwaZulu-Natal, but also in the north of the country. This puts a lot of pressure on the weaner price.
Furthermore, although the high maize prices are to the benefit of grain producers, it puts a lot of pressure on feedlot producers because it means that margins are a lot slimmer.
However, there is light at the end of the tunnel, mainly due to the fact that exports are gaining momentum. The export initiative will not reach the desirable levels overnight, but it will happen in time. The red meat industry must ensure that traceability and biosecurity are in place. Producers must ensure they meet the expectations of the countries importing the South African product.
He encouraged red meat producers to continue doing what they do best, as the tide will turn.
