Tick and biting fly numbers increased due to increased temperatures and humidity, according to the latest report of the monthly report on livestock disease trends as informally reported by veterinarians belonging to the Ruminant Veterinary Association of South Africa (RuVASA).

As a result, the occurrence of tick and insect transmitted diseases such as African Red Water (seven provinces) and Asiatic Red Water (eight provinces), Heartwater (six provinces) and Anaplasmosis (nine provinces) increased.

Internal parasites, causing production losses and mortalities to production animals, were reported from most areas where good rainfall occurred in previous months. Wireworm infestations (nine provinces), resistant to most anthelmintic groups, caused great losses to small stock.

Insect transmitted diseases such as Lumpy Skin Disease (eight provinces), Three Day Stiff Sickness (nine provinces), and Blue Tongue (nine provinces) were reported.

Bull testing reports were received and Trichomoniasis (six provinces) and Vibriosis are still a huge problem, leading to poor conception rates. Biosecurity measures should be kept in place at all times.

Foot and Mouth Disease, Bovine Brucellosis (five provinces), Trichomoniasis (six provinces), Cryptosporidiosis (six provinces) and BMC (Snotsiekte) (five provinces) are some of the diseases that farmers should constantly be aware of.
