ANIMAL DISEASES IN THE NORTHERN CAPE

Various diseases were reported in the Northern Cape, according to its report for the period from 1 April to 15 August 2024.

There were also sheep in Brandvlei region which tested positive for rabies, while two aardwolves tested positive in the De Aar area.

  • Sheep scab

A total of 14 farms in the Calvinia, Springbok and De Aar regions proved to be positive for sheep scab.

The biggest concern currently is the fact that some farmers want to move from the Northern Cape to the Western Cape during an outbreak. Veld conditions is not good in the Bushmanland region and the farmers want to move to better grazing in the Western Cape. Approval was given by the Western Cape to move some animals from the Northern Cape after they received treatment.

  • African swine fever

Two outbreaks occurred during June and July in Kimberley and Griekwastad, involving domestic pigs and European Bush pigs. The disease seems now to be endemic to the Northern Cape and is spread by warthogs to most areas where they are found. Previous testing and research were conducted on the tampans associated with the warthogs, and all samples tested positive for African Swine Fever.

  • Avian Influenza

Two farms in the Fraserburg area tested positive for the Avian influenza H5N6 and H5N8 virus.

Both farms were quarantined. One farm will be slaughtered out when all the birds are ready for slaughter. The other farm lost most of their birds due to cold and the last group were culled on the farm on 23 July.

  • Fowl typhoid (Salmonella gallinarum)

A farmer in the Jan Kempdorp-area reported mortalities tested positive for fowl typhoid.

Fowl typhoid is caused by Salmonella enterica serotype Gallinarumbiovar Gallinarum and is characterised by mortality rates in young birds similar to those of Salmonella enterica serotype Gallinarum biovar Pullorum, although mortality rates of S Gallinarum are possibly higher in older birds. Younger birds are anorectic, weak, and depressed, and they have white faecal material pasted to the vent area. Affected birds may also have respiratory disease, blindness, or swollen joints. Older birds may be pale and dehydrated and have diarrhoea. Lesions in older birds may include a swollen, friable, and often bile-stained liver, with or without necrotic foci; enlarged spleen and kidneys; anaemia; and enteritis. Diagnosis is based on isolation and identification of the organism. The goal for control of fowl typhoid is elimination of the pathogen; therefore, treatment is not recommended.

  • Foot and mouth disease (FMD)

One case of suspect animals was investigated in the Prieska area in May, and was resolved within 24 hours.

The good cooperation between the farming community, the department and the laboratory to trace and test the affected animals and to get the results out within 24 hours must be commended

A trace back was done on animals that were supplied from the Northern Cape to the Eastern Cape for export to Mauritius, and no suspect animals were found.

A consignment from the Northern Cape to Mauritius, which is currently under quarantine is in the process of being tested.

  • Brucellosis

A number of farms are positive in the province, with no new ones recorded during the last quarter. The normal procedure of slaughter and testing is ongoing in the different regions.
