The RPO Gauteng and Gauteng Livestock Theft Forum hosted a workshop on 15 November on the marking of livestock and the health risk that illegal slaughtering can pose to the public.
Dr Juanita de Jager, a veterinarian attached to the Department of Public Health, made a presentation about the risks associated with illegal slaughter and what the department is doing to curb it.
Warrant Officer Kemp, attached to the Cullinan Livestock Theft Unit and responsible for endangered species in Gauteng’s presentation was well received by the province’s SAPS rural safety officers who attended the workshop. All 55 officers are equipped with an English manual on animal identification, for use in their operations. Aspects addressed during the presentation were the branding of livestock, movement of livestock in and through the province, what permits are required, how the Section 6 and 8 certificates should look like, and how to check a brandmark to confirm ownership.
The impact of livestock theft on a farm was also explained and it was resolved that a follow-up workshop will take place during 2025. Requests for information in a printed form were in high demand and attention will be paid to this aspect during 2025.
