The total land use of commercial agriculture in South Africa is more or less 46,4 million hectares, utilising 37,8% of total land use in the country.

A surface of 136 214 hectares (27 farms) of these 46,4 million was specifically identified for the evaluating and testing of predation methods. The aim is to identify adaptable management strategies which are sustainable and workable for the unique South African farming conditions.

The monitor farms represent areas with different rainfall, vegetation and eco systems. It forms a representative platform for initiating and experimenting with sustainable management strategies for the livestock as well as the wild life industry.

  • Northern Cape (6 farms – 48 233 ha): Sutherland, Fraserburg, Loxton, Victoria-Wes, Britstown and Noupoort.
  • Free State (6 farms – 20 143 ha): Philippolis, Wepener, Trompsburg, Senekal and Vrede
  • Mpumalanga (3 farms – 7 013 ha): Amersfoort, Ermelo and Carolina.
  • KwaZulu-Natal (3 farms – 15 600 ha): Underberg, Utrecht and Luneburg.
  • Eastern Cape (6 farms – 31 782 ha): Jansenville, Aberdeen, Hofmeyr, Bedford, Maclear and Dordrecht.
  • Western Cape (3 farms – 13 443 ha): Struisbaai, Gouritsmond and Beaufort-West.
