Die Namibiese veesektor het jaar-op-jaar afnames in alle groot subsektore gedurende Augustus 2024 ervaar, met die uitsondering van die varksubsektor, volgens die Lewendehawe en Lewendehaweprodukte Raad.

 

Year-on-year, the Namibian livestock sector witnessed declines across all major sub-sectors, except the pig sub-sector during August 2024, according to the Livestock and Livestock Product Board.

Intussen het die vleisbedryf verbeterde prestasies gedurende Augustus 2024 getoon. Prystendense het gemengde resultate aangeteken met die s-VCF speen-, bees- en skaapkarkaspryse wat gedurende die oorsigtydperk gedaal het, terwyl die n-VCF beeskarkasprys gedurende Augustus 2024 verbeter het.

 

Beessektor

Algehele beesbemarking het vir die eerste keer vanjaar ‘n afname beleef as gevolg van verminderde aktiwiteite by beide uitvoergoedgekeurde en plaaslike abattoirs, sowel as in lewendige uitvoere. Totale bemarking het jaar-tot-jaar met 17,3% gedaal, met ’n maand-tot-maand-daling van 16,4%. Dit bring die jaar-tot-datum totaal op 278 195 beeste te staan wat in 2024 bemark is, vergeleke met 210 807 wat gedurende dieselfde tydperk in 2023 bemark is. Eweneens het beesuitvoere met 24,3% gedaal, aangedryf deur ‘n 26,8%-afname in uitvoere na Suid-Afrika tydens Augustus 2024 .

 

Jaar-op-jaar het s-VCF-speenkalfprodusentepryse met 11,2% gedaal, met ‘n gemiddeld van N$24,01/kg in Augustus 2024 vergeleke met N$27,04/kg in 2023. Verder het die s-VCF-beesvleis allegraadse produsentekarkasprys tydens Augustus 2024 tot N$56,44/kg gedaal vanaf N$61,10/kg wat in Augustus 2023 aangeteken is. Gevolglik het die jaar tot-datum B2-karkasprys teen die einde van Augustus 2024 op N$60,23/kg gestaan.

 

Intussen was die n-VCF-tollie produsenteprys gemiddeld N$22,17/kg in Augustus 2024, N$1,28/kg laer as die Augustus 2023-vlak van N$23,45/kg, terwyl die allegraadse beeskarkasprys in Augustus 2024 met N$2,01/kg gestyg het en gemiddeld N$39,45/kg was, teenoor die N$37,44/kg wat gedurende dieselfde tydperk in 2023 aan produsente betaal is.

 

Skaapsektor

Die skaapsektor het gedurende die oorsigtydperk ‘n afname in bemarkingsgetalle aangeteken. Altesaam 48 232 skape is gedurende Augustus 2024 bemark, wat 26,5% minder is as die 65 651 skape wat gedurende 2023 bemark is. Die jaar-tot-datum bemarkingstotaal het teen die einde van Augustus 2024 op 647 741 gestaan. Slagaktiwiteite by beide uitvoergoedgekeurde en plaaslike abattoirs het gedurende Augustus 2024 gedaal, sodat ‘n gesamentlike afname van 54,2% aangeteken is. Die vraag van die Suid-Afrikaanse mark na plaaslike lewendige skape het gedurende Augustus 2024 met 18,7% verswak.

 

Lamprodusentepryse het relatief stabiel gebly gedurende Augustus 2024 en was gemiddeld N$33,41/kg in vergelyking met N$32,87/kg wat produsente in die vergelykbare tydperk van 2023 ontvang het, terwyl die gemiddelde A2-karkasprodusenteprys op N$78,19/kg te staan gekom het.

 

Wat handel betref, het die jaar-tot-datum uitvoere van lam- en skaapvleis met 25,9% gedaal weens swak slagaktiwiteite. Lam- en skaapvleisuitvoere het gedurende Augustus 2024 jaar-op-jaar met 17,3% gedaal vergeleke met dieselfde tydperk verlede jaar.

 

Die verminderde deurset wat by abattoirs aangeteken is, het gelei tot ‘n daling in lam- en skaapvleisuitvoere met slegs 49 373 kg wat na Botswana uitgevoer is in die vorm van karkasse, snitte en lamspek. Intussen het skaapvleisinvoere hoofsaaklik in die vorm van skaapderms gedurende Augustus 2024 toegeneem.

Meanwhile, the meat industry showed improved performances during August 2024. Price trends recorded mixed results with the s-VCF weaner, beef and mutton carcass prices decreasing during the period under review, while the n-VCF beef carcass price improved during August 2024.

 

Cattle sector

For the first time this year, overall cattle marketing saw a decline due to reduced activity at both export-approved and local abattoirs, as well as in live exports. Year-on-year, total marketing dropped by 17.3%, with a month-on-month decline of 16.4%. This brings the year-to-date total to 278 195 cattle marketed in 2024, compared to 210 807 marketed during the same period in 2023. Equally, cattle exports fell by 24.3%, driven by a 26.8% decrease in exports to South Africa in August 2024.

 

Year-on-year, s-VCF weaner producer price declined by 11.2%, averaging N$24.01/kg in August 2024 compared to N$27.04/kg in 2023. Furthermore, the s-VCF beef all-grade producer carcass price dropped to N$56.44/kg in August 2024, from N$61.10/kg recorded in August 2023, consequently bringing the year-to-date B2 carcass price to N$60.23/kg by the end of August 2024.

 

Meanwhile, n-VCF tolly producer price averaged N$22.17/kg in August 2024, N$1.28/kg lower than the August 2023 level of N$23.45/kg while the all-grade beef carcass price increased by N$2.01/kg and averaged N$39.45/kg in August 2024, from N$37.44/kg paid to producers during the same period in 2023.

 

Sheep sector

The sheep sector recorded a decline in marketing numbers during the period under review. A total of 48 232 sheep were marketed during August 2024, 26.5% lower than the 65 651 sheep marketed during 2023. The year-to-date marketing total stood at 647 741 by the end of August 2024. Slaughtering activities at both export approved and local abattoirs dropped during August 2024, recording a combined decline of 54.2%. Demand for local live sheep by the South Africa market weakened by 18.7% during August 2024.

 

Lamb producer prices remained relatively stable during August 2024 and averaged N$33.41/kg in comparison to N$32.87/kg received by producers in the comparable period of 2023.The sheep all-grade carcass producer price averaged N$53.35/kg during the period under review while the A2 average carcass producer price came in at N$78.19/kg.

 

In respect of trade, year-to-date export of lamb and mutton dropped by 25.9% due to poor slaughter activity. Year-on-year, lamb and mutton exports declined by 17.3% during August 2024 compared to the same period last year.

 

The reduced throughput recorded at abattoirs resulted in a drop of lamb and mutton exports with only 49 373kg being exported to Botswana in the form of carcasses, cuts and lamb bacon. Meanwhile, mutton imports primarily in the form of sheep casings increased during August 2024.
